Clyde had been sneaking out to commit the murders personally before heading back to his cell. He and Detective Dunnigan (Colm Meaney, Con Air) discover Clyde owns a property near the prison he's being held in, and find a tunnel that runs underneath it, which he constructed himself over the years. Rice comes to realize if Clyde was sent to solidarity confinement it must have been by his design. Law Abiding Citizen reveals Clyde worked for the CIA for a time and is an expert in being able to engineer and commit elaborate murders. Clyde's campaign begins with him torturing and murdering said killer, but despite being arrested, he's somehow able to target and kill other victims like a Judge or Rice's assistant Sarah. That said, it was Rice's decision to be lenient with the killer of Clyde's family that partly led to the whole mess. Given all he's suffered, it's hard not to root for Butler's character, but he gradually becomes so monstrous that viewers later side with Foxx's Rice instead. Law Abiding Citizen poses some interesting questions about the justice system and toys with audience sympathies. LAW ABIDING CITIZEN FULL MOVIE SERIES
Marvel's own vigilante also returned in the form of The Punisher series with Jon Bernthal. More recently, the Taken franchise led to a run of similarly themed movies, including The Equalizer movies with Denzel Washington, Peppermint and, of course, Eli Roth's Death Wish remake. The film was extremely controversial upon release and Bronson would return for four sequels. This starred Charles Bronson as an architect whose wife and daughter are attacked by a gang, and he takes to the streets with a revolver to lash out at any muggers or criminals who cross his path. The revenge movie genre rose sharply in popularity following the success of 1974's Death Wish. Here's the explosive ending of Law Abiding Citizen explained.
